Celebrate The Magic of the Disney Legacy
What is The Disney Legacy? When the club celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1984, we asked numerous Disney luminaries to define what they believed to be Walt’s legacy to the world.
Comparing Walt to the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, Imagineer X. Atencio called him “the consummate storyteller of his time.” Imagineer George McGinnis cited Walt’s optimism, while Imagineer Bob Gurr focused on Walt’s determination to “do it right, no matter what.” Songwriter Richard Sherman noted that Walt “gave all the people of the world a chance to reflect on yesterday, enjoy today, and dream of tomorrow.” And Imagineer Marty Sklar noted four touchstones of Walt’s legacy:
1. Optimism for the future
2. Quality is job one!
3. Meet the needs of the people
4. Family is king
Mary Costa, the voice of Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, said that, “I like to think of his legacy as kind of a pebble, tossed into a pool of creativity; his mark on the world continues to ripple through time even to this day.”
These comments -- and the many more that were offered -- suggest the enormous scope of Walt’s legacy to the world. That legacy is renewed each time a Guest steps through the gates of a Disney theme park, whistles a Disney song, sits down to watch a Disney film or puts on a Disney t-shirt. And passion for that legacy is at the heart of why the Disneyana Fan Club exists and something that all its members share.
That passion has inspired the club to create two programs to explore and celebrate the Disney legacy. The Disneyana Fan Club Disney Legend Awards honor individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the Disney legacy, while the Disneyana Fan Club Disney Heritage Award honors those who work to preserve and promote Disney history. You can read more about both programs and all the recipients here. And keep an eye on the club’s calendar so you can be part of the next exciting legacy events.
